You're free to use any pharmacy in the UK — there's no registration required and you can switch at any time. If your current pharmacy consistently can't get your medication, switching could solve the problem.
The Good News: No Paperwork Required
Unlike switching GPs, switching pharmacies requires zero paperwork. You can:
- Take your paper prescription to any pharmacy in the UK
- Ask your GP to send electronic prescriptions to a different pharmacy
- Use different pharmacies for different medications
- Switch back at any time
How to Switch Electronic Prescriptions
- Visit your new pharmacy and ask them to "nominate" themselves for your electronic prescriptions
- They'll update the NHS Spine (the central NHS database) — takes seconds
- Your next electronic prescription will go to the new pharmacy automatically
- You don't need to tell your GP (though it's polite to)
Finding a Better Pharmacy
When looking for a pharmacy with better stock for your specific medication:
- Try independent pharmacies — they often use different wholesalers from chains and may have access to stock others don't
- Ask which wholesaler they use — if your current pharmacy uses Alliance Healthcare and can't get your medicine, try one that uses AAH or Phoenix
- Consider hospital outpatient pharmacies — they have separate supply chains and sometimes dispense community prescriptions
- Try online pharmacies — regulated online pharmacies may source from different suppliers
- Call ahead — before switching, call the prospective pharmacy and ask if they can reliably get your specific medication
Tips for a Good Relationship with Your New Pharmacy
- Introduce yourself and explain which medications you take
- Ask them to keep your regular medications in stock for you
- Give them as much notice as possible for repeats
- Be a regular customer — pharmacies prioritise their regulars during shortages
